Learning technologies minor
Become a digital-savvy leader in your career field. As new online and mobile technologies are being added to our lives every day, they are transforming the way we communicate, collaborate, create, and learn. Gain mastery in the productive use of these tools to become a responsible and skilled leader in digital communication, creation, and learning.
All the core courses for the minor are delivered online and offered during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Electives for the minor include both online and on-campus options so this program can be taken entirely online.

About this program
Curriculum
The minor consists of three required core courses and two elective courses.
Minimum of 15 credits total is required (9 credits from core courses + 6 credits from electives)
The core courses are grounded in both the practical and theoretical understanding of learning technologies. The elective courses develop understanding of the application of learning technologies across a variety of diverse contexts and fields including journalism, design, computer science, educational psychology, and others.
Core curriculum and instruction courses (9 credits):
- CI 3342 Social Media and Connected Learning
- CI 4311W Technology and Ethics in Society
- CI 4312 Digital Culture and Learning
Additional elective courses (6 credits):
Two additional electives in a complementary area such as journalism; design; computer science; educational psychology; organizational leadership, policy, and development; history; and philosophy. Electives are chosen from an approved list.

Educational experience
In the learning technologies minor, you will develop expertise in using digital media and online technologies to promote learning and creativity in your career field and daily life. You will gain a critical understanding of technology's social, cultural, educational, and professional impact.
You can expect to:
- develop skills in video and audio content creation to support collaborative multimedia work and authoring on the web for educational purposes
- leverage web technologies to construct and maintain an online presence and professional identity
- facilitate and sustain engagement of an online community of users around shared interests and goals
- design creative web content and online networks
- address ethical issues associated with web-based technologies such as digital equity
Career paths
As digital technologies become a necessity in almost every field, learning how to leverage them to communicate, research, design collaborative spaces, and become fluent in social and mobile learning will position you to become a technically, ethically, and socially skilled leader in your chosen field.
Students majoring in communications, business and marketing, social sciences, design, computer science, and education fields will be prepared with practical skills to enter the workforce and add immediate value to your organization or personal creative endeavors.

Application Deadlines
- August 1 priority deadline for Fall enrollment
- December 15 priority deadline for Spring enrollment
- April 15 priority deadline for Summer enrollment
Students must be enrolled at the University of Minnesota and hold at least a 2.0 GPA to enroll in the program.
