Mathematics education additional teaching license
This program is designed for teachers who hold a Minnesota license and want to add an additional mathematics license to expand their areas of expertise in their schools.
Mission
Our program prepares future middle and high school math teachers to support adolescent learners while exploring the personal and political of math instruction. Instructors examine how educational experiences are shaped by race, language, culture, identity, and codes of power. We educate teachers to reflect on these issues with students through modeling and discussions. We cultivate relationships with diverse schools, teachers, and learners committed to engaging communities, enacting social justice, transforming learning experiences, and creating joy.
Quote from Ericka Storvick
I appreciated that the U offered a one-year, intensive program that would allow me to become a teacher sooner, and that the student teaching hours were built into the program.
About this program
Curriculum
Working teachers can pursue their additional licensure in this full-time, 13-month program that begins in May each year. Coursework is sequential. After you are admitted, you will receive a customized curriculum plan of courses to take in order to be recommended for licensure.
This ensures you get maximum credit for previous academic work and work experiences.
In order to be recommended for your Minnesota Mathematics additional license, you must successfully complete these licensure requirements mandated by the state of Minnesota.
This material is available in alternative formats upon request. Direct requests to the Office of Teacher Education at ote@umn.edu, 612-625-5060.
MEd Option
Pursue the additional license alone or pursue the additional license and Mathematics Education MEd and teaching license at the same time.
Apply to both the license program and the MEd degree and work with your adviser to plan your coursework to meet both requirements simultaneously.
Teacher scholars of color program
Do you identify, or are you identified, as a non-majority racial group? Consider participating in the Teacher Scholars of Color program. Students admitted to the MEd and initial teaching license programs have the opportunity to join a community of prospective teachers of color and get paired with a faculty mentor. International students are also welcome to this program. Find out more about the TSoC program.
