Feeling Anti-Racism: How Popular Anti-Racist Books Impede Equity in the Aftermath of George Floyd
Anti-Racist books became bestsellers in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. This talk uses the theories of neoliberal multiculturalism (a contemporary form of racialcapitalism) and racialized emotions to examine how the increased circulation of popular anti-racist books among educators paradoxically works to impede racial justice. Drawing from the connections between 1960s race novels and modern anti-racist books, the presentation describes how “feeling anti-racism” becomes a conduit for neoliberal multiculturalism. As aresult, anti-racist books can function.

The University of Minnesota campuses were built on the traditional homelands of the Dakota and Ojibwe, and scores of other Indigenous peoples who have walked on these lands from time immemorial. It is important to acknowledge the peoples on whose land we live, learn, and work as we seek to improve and strengthen our relations with our tribal nations. We also acknowledge that words are not enough. We must ensure that our institution provides support, resources, and programs that increase access to all aspects of higher education for our American Indian students, staff, faculty, and community members.
