Areas of interest
Academic access in postsecondary education and increasing the success of low-income, first-generation college, and historically underrepresented students in college. I come from a family where I was the first to attend college, much less to complete it. I understand some of the challenges faced by many students.

What motivates me in my work?
Each of us is responsible for making a difference by doing the things we were placed on this planet to do and act in a responsible and respectful way with everyone around us. It is a joy to continue the work.
Research - Teaching - Community Engagement and Service
Research: My research projects is focused in five areas: (a) academic access, developmental education, equity projects, and learning assistance; (b) learning technologies; (c) postsecondary peer cooperative learning groups; (d) Universal Design for Learning; and (e) history curriculum and simulations. These are not mutually exclusive to each other since effective practices often are found at the crossroads of these projects. A central theme is improving academic success of historically underrepresented students.
Teaching: I share strategies that were useful in my first-year college history class to improve academic achievement and engagement. These approaches include cooperative learning, embedded learning assistance support, history simulations, learning technologies, and Universal Design for Learning.
Community Engagement and Service: I deeply embrace public engagement as part of my responsibility as a University faculty member to collaborate with the community in working together to create and disseminate answers to problems facing students. I serve on the editorial board for several publications in the field and was recognized as an Academic Fellow by the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations.I managing a national clearinghouse for best education practices in TRIO programs. On a personal level, I continue to mentor a young man from a difficult set of circumstances.
