The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $1 million grant to Dr. George Veletsianos, professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota to support a project titled “Expanding STEM Education Researchers' Generative AI Capacities”. The award will fund a blended learning institute that will run for 3 years. The project seeks to address the shortage of accessible, field-specific GenAI training for researchers by developing approaches that overcome both the technical complexity of existing programs and the limited capacity of resource-constrained institutions. Its primary focus is on preparing early- and mid-career education researchers how to make sense of and use GenAI in their studies of how students learn science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This project brings together a team of collaborators: Panayiota Kendeou (Co-Principal Investigator, University of Minnesota), Krista D. Glazewski (Co-Principal Investigator, North Carolina State University), and Emma Braaten (Co-Principal Investigator, North Carolina State University).
